If you’re switching to macOS from Windows, you might be confused about installing software. Sure, there’s the Mac App Store, but not everything is in there. If you look for apps outside the store, you’ll find different kinds of installers: DMG files with apps in them, PKG installers, and simple applications inside ZIP archives. Once the Basesystem.dmg file is ran on your Mac, it may begin performing different malicious activities. These may be of all tpes, but the main one is spyware and virus actions. The bad news here is that once you try to delete Basesystem.dmg, the Mac asks to enter the password and identify as an administrator. DMG files are macOS disk image files. They are much like ISO files—their Windows-based counterpart. These disk images normally contain program installation files for macOS apps, but they can also be used to hold compressed files. If it’s an app written for macOS, you obviously won’t be able to install and run the app on Windows.

What is a DMG file?
A DMG file is a mountable disk image created in macOS. It contains raw block data typically compressed and sometimes encrypted. DMG files are commonly used for macOS software installers that are downloaded from the Internet, which mount a virtual disk on the desktop when opened.
The DMG format replaces the older .IMG file format used in Mac OS Classic. DMG disk images can be opened using the Apple Disk Utility that is bundled with macOS on Apple computers.
DMG files are Mac-specific and are not intended for use in Windows. However, Windows Daemon Tools may be able to mount virtual drives from some DMG image files. Other utilities may also be able to convert DMG files to a format that can be recognized by Windows.

🔴 Can't open a .dmg file?
When you double-click a file to open it, Windows examines the filename extension. If Windows recognizes the filename extension, it opens the file in the program that is associated with that filename extension. When Windows does not recognize a filename extension, you receive the following message:
Windows cannot open this file:
example.dmg
To open this file, Windows needs to know what program you want to use to open it...

🔴 Can I change the extension of files?
Changing the filename extension of a file is not a good idea. When you change a file's extension, you change the way programs on your computer read the file. The problem is, changing the file extension does not change the file format.
